Sutro Baths Family Session | San Francisco

This family session at the Sutro Baths was one of my favorite ones this year. It was a sunny day in San Francisco and the weather looked good when I left my apartment but once I got to the Sutro Baths it was covered in fog. I’ve learned over this past year how amazing shooting in fog actually is though so I wasn’t disappointed. It’s totally different than shooting with dark clouds – the fog really reflects light and brightens your images really beautifully. Very different effect than dark clouds muddying up your images. By the time the shoot was over, the visibility was really poor but you wouldn’t know from the pictures which show really bright and even lighting.

My family shoots require planning to make sure they are amazing. After a session is booked, I send out my outfit and welcome guide and we take time choosing a location that will fit what my clients are looking for. The welcome and outfit guides to helps set expectations and guide my clients on choosing wardrobe that will photograph well and also make for timeless imagery. The session lasts about an hour and then it takes several weeks to get the film developed. Film is slower than digital and a lot more expensive. I know that I could save money/make more money in my business if I would switch to digital like so many “film/hybrid” photographers have done but I can’t bring myself to do it. There’s something so special about the process of film and the images it creates so I shoot 100% film for these sessions. If you haven’t had your family portraits shot on film, it’s so worth it! If you have any questions about my sessions or process, please reach out via email or fill out my contact form to learn more.

In the meantime, here is this beautiful family session at the Sutro Baths on a very foggy and romantic evening…
