MIYAJIMA ISLAND ANNIVERSARY SESSION

For this anniversary session we travelled to Miyajima – a small island located near Hiroshima, Japan. Japan is made up of 4 main islands and thousands of smaller ones but Miyajima is special. Miyajima is not only beautiful but it’s also inhabited with friendly deer, hiking trails, good food, and colorful shrines. It’s home to the Itsukushima Shrine which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (although it is currently under construction). The energy on the island is powerful and calming and it has quickly become one of my favorite spots to shoot in Japan.

Abbigail and Travis have been married for 4 years and like my own husband, Travis’s work brought them to Japan. This anniversary session was a way to document their time in Japan and capture the beauty of this island. We spent the afternoon wandering around, finding little spots to explore and dodging the deer that thought my film rolls were a snack.

Anniversary sessions are so special for me to shoot because they document years that are often otherwise forgotten. We celebrate beginnings and mourn endings but so much good is happening right in the middle. It’s important to capture each stage as it comes and I hope that Abbigail and Travis always treasure these photos that document their short but eventful years spent in Japan.

For this shoot I got lucky with beautiful sun and clear skies which is rare in Japan. I shot the full session on film and chose Portra 400 for these. I felt like the colors of Portra would go perfectly with this island and I’m really happy with how they turned out. Let me know what you think of this beautiful session!

Thank you!!

Such gorgeous photos. My husband and I got married during COVID last year, so we have yet to go anywhere for a honeymoon. I’m planning on our first trip/honeymoon being in November on our anniversary and getting gorgeous shots like these.

That’s a great idea, I hope it works out!

All of these photos are so dreamy! I loved the location and styling of the shoot, too.

These are gorgeous!! Coming from another photographer, you nailed it. I love the fun fact about the deer so interested in your film. i didn’t even know deer just walked around there. How fun!

Thanks Mary! The deer are one of the best parts about this island, they are so cute and funny!
