The downside of summer in Japan is the heat and humidity but the plus side is the beautiful lotus fields that pop up. The lotus root is an important part of Japanese cuisine while the lotus flowers are a symbol of purity, enlightenment and rebirth. They represent coming from suffering into light as the lotus rises from the muddy waters perfectly bright and beautiful.

“As the lotus rises on its stalk unsoiled by the mud and water, so the wise one speaks of peace and is unstained by the opinions of the world – Buddha

The lotus fields are abundant in Iwakuni and even the heat can’t keep people from going out to walk through the fields and take pictures. This family shoot for a friend was really special. Even though our guys are on deployment, it’s still important to make the most of our time in Japan and experience and document every part of it.
