what to expect

Family Sessions

Before you get to the details, I wanted to share a little bit about my process and what you can expect from working with me. I photograph with a mix of film and digital for family sessions but rely heavily on film to accomplish my style and tones. Working with film is a slow and laid back process because there are only 16 shots per roll. This allows me to create a relaxed environment with little breaks built into the session where you can have a moment to reset and take a breath while I change out the film.

Sometimes when parents reach out they are worried that their child won’t last for an hour of taking pictures. If that’s a concern for you, I’d like to explain how my sessions might be different to what you’re used to. My goal is to capture your family in a way that feels authentic to you and a true reflection of your love for each other. To help facilitate this, I’ll direct you in a way that feels comfortable and familiar. I’ll have you do all the things you would do together if I weren’t there – interacting, playing, making each other laugh and being in the moment together. Of course we will get photos of you smiling at the camera as well but a lot of the session will hopefully feel like I’m not even there.

I understand that family photos are an investment of your time, money and energy. But I also know that it all goes by so quickly and these photos will gain in value to you as the years progress. I consider my job to be an important part of preserving your legacy, cementing these moments into your consciousness and creating something tangible for you to hold on to. I hope my work allows you to see your love and family as art – something to hang on the walls and pass down to your children and grandchildren.

I work best with people who understand and appreciate what I create – families who want to spend some time interacting together, not just smiling at the camera. If you connect with my work, I would love to chat further and hear more about your family.

Step 01

Once we discuss a date and time I’ll send you a link to book your session. Half of your balance is due up front to reserve your date. This is a nonrefundable initial payment but it can be used towards a future session if you need to reschedule. I’ll send an invoice for the remaining balance in the week leading up to your session.

Step 02

After you’ve booked, I’ll send you my welcome and outfit guide to help walk you through choosing your outfits and how to prepare for our time together. I’ll also confirm the location and any other relevant details. Our session will be fun and easy, all you have to do is come relaxed and ready to hang out with your favorite people.

Step 03

After your session is done, I’ll mail the film to the lab where they will process, scan and then email me your images digitally. Once I receive your images from the lab, I’ll edit the digital images to match and then upload everything to an online gallery where you can download your images. You will receive your gallery within 4 weeks of our session.

Frequently Asked

I love working with film because I find the colors and tones to be really beautiful and flattering. This allows me to create a gallery that is truly timeless – you’ll be excited to hang your photos, create an album and share them with friends and family.

If you’re interested in a shoot at the beach or another open area we typically want to shoot an hour before sunset for the most flattering light. If that timing doesn’t work for your family, there are shaded locations where we can shoot at during the day. Choosing a time when your child is alert and happy is more important than the location so please let me know what is best for you.

It will take me between 3-4 weeks to get your session done. If you need your images sooner, I offer rush delivery for an added fee.

My specialty is maternity, newborn and early years (under 8). If your kids are older than this, please let me know so we can chat more about what you’re looking for and see if I would be a good fit.

I have a list of preferred locations in San Francisco that I’ve chosen based on their lighting and beauty. We are lucky to be close to so many unique backdrops so whether you want to shoot at the beach or in a beautiful garden, I will recommend the perfect spot for you and your family. You can check out some of my favorite San Francisco locations here.

Clothes make a huge difference on how your photos turn out so I take an active role in helping you choose clothes that will photograph well. After you book I’ll send you a welcome guide that includes information about what type of clothes and colors to choose.

Your gallery will include all the images we take (minus any blinking or repeat photos) and will have at least 70 images.

Absolutely. I want your session to be as beautiful and relaxed as possible so I will keep an eye on the weather leading up to our session and update you if it looks like we might need to reschedule. Sessions on the coast require more flexibility as I try to minimize fog and wind for your session as much as possible.
